Tuesday, January 3, 2012
Get your glitz on this winter at the Berlinale, a prestigious film festival that's surprisingly accessible to the public. The Berlin International Film Festival shows about 400 films within ten days, mostly international or European premieres. Films of every genre, length and format find their place in the various sections: great international cinema in the Competition, independent and art house in Panorama, films for young audiences in Generation, new discoveries and promising talents from the German film scene in Perspektive Deutsches Kino, avant garde, experimental and unfamiliar cinematography in the Forum,
transmediale 2012
Monday, January 2, 2012
transmediale celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2012, and as always it's a fascinating look at the weird and wonderful world of digital art. This year, the arts festival celebrating digital culture wraps their program around the theme "in/compatible." Everything seems to connect in our network culture, but not everything fits or works together. What artistic imaginations arise from this confounding reality?
Christmas Cabaret
Wednesday, December 14, 2011
Head down to Heimathafen Neukölln for Christmas cabaret, Berlin style. The three 'Rixdorf Pearls' break out the tinsel and fill the beautiful old ballroom with festive irreverence. With a healthy sprinkling of kitsch in their holiday cheer, they entertain with classic songs and a certain disregard for political correctness.
International Green Week (Grüne Woche) 2012
Thursday, December 1, 2011
For more than 75 years, the International Green Week (IGW, Internationale Grüne Woche) has put the world's food, agricultural, and horticultural industries on display in Berlin. While wandering through Messe Berlin, visitors can literally eat their way around the world, sampling foods and luxury items, fresh produce, beer, wine and spirits, meat and sausages, teas, seafood, spices, herbs... The exhibition stays true to its agricultural roots as well, with livestock, agricultural and gardening supplies,
Rixdorf Christmas Market
Tuesday, November 29, 2011
The Rixdorf Weihnachtsmarkt is one of Berlin's prettiest Christmas markets. Rixdorf was once a little village that got swallowed up by the big city, and the charming tree-lined square, lit by gas lamps, still has an old-fashioned air. The market is on for one weekend only, and it's small and sweet, with great food, a small stage with carolers and children's shows, pony rides, and even the three Magi with real camels.
Black light miniature golf
Tuesday, November 29, 2011
Most people don't come to Berlin to go golfing, but on a short and gloomy day, it's like going under a sunlamp, just way more fun! If putting is your passion get your fix in Kreuzberg's Gorlitzer Park at Schwarzlicht Minigolf Berlin. Although it gets dark at 15:30 these days, never fear: the course is indoors and lit by black lights.
Kosmetiksalon Babette
Tuesday, November 29, 2011
It's impossible to have a drink at Kosmetiksalon Babette without marvelling the glamorous architecture of the bar. The 1960's Soviet-Era glass box is on the main drag of Karl Marx Allee (hence KMA 36) the former official parade route of East Berlin. Once a GDR cosmetic salon, the bar sets itself apart from the monolithic concrete apartment blocks as a jewel of modern design.
Bread and Butter
Tuesday, November 22, 2011
Bread and Butter, the fashion tradeshow for designers, brands and labels, is back this winter at Berlin's Tempelhof airport. With over 600 brands represented, it's the European trade show for street fashion! Miniloft apartments are the perfect location for Bread and Butter guests: you can live in happening Mitte, while the show is easily accessible with the U6 subway line,
KTV
Friday, November 18, 2011
The area north of Miniloft is changing fast, and now there's a great club just a hop, skip and a jump away. We're so happy that one of the last dilapidated, unrenovated buildings on Chauseestraße has been bought by some art-and-party oriented folks, instead of unscrupulous investors looking to make shoddy apartments and lots of cash.
Schleusenkrug
Tuesday, November 8, 2011
The days may be darkening but the last leaves are still golden - enjoy the final days of this beautiful fall with a walk through Tiergarten and a stop for a delicious snack in Schleusenkrug. This popular beer garden, located at an odd corner at the corner of the zoo and the park, is worth a visit any time of year, with a cosy
