Katz Orange
Monday, April 16, 2012
Dinner at Katz Orange is a sensual experience. The first glimpse is already a feast for the eyes; the two-story restaurant is housed in a stunning former brewery, set back in a quiet courtyard. (If the weather's fine, consider booking a table outside.) You'll feel special, cared for by the sweetly attentive staff and sipping one of their delicious cocktails –'Grape Me' is already a cult drink, just a few months after the restaurant's opening – while Ethiopian jazz plays softly in the background.
Eismanufaktur
Wednesday, April 11, 2012
We're lucky to have an addictive ice cream shop ust a few blocks from the Miniloft apartments. The cheerful ice cream heros at Berliner Eismanufaktur serve up delectable, all-natural ice cream. They offer eighteen rotating flavours: their vanilla is the best we've ever tasted, the pistachio belongs in the pistachio hall of fame, and their sorbets are intensely fruity. Branch out with more unusual varieties like walnut, milk-honey-rosemary, or passion-fruit sorbet – at one euro per scoop (50 cents for a smaller kids' scoop), you can try them all, a pretty sweet deal for a few minutes in heaven.
Princess Cheesecake
Monday, April 9, 2012
A visit to Princess Cheesecake gives an ordinary afternoon a little boost of luxury. Their motto: "Make everyday a lovely day!" is spot on. You will feel like royalty. Their exquisite cakes are as much a feast for the eyes – little works of art, heaped with glistening fruit or quivering with smooth pastel layers – as they are a delight to the tastebuds. Choose from a wide variety, from rich New York style cheesecakes to lighter, quark or ricotta-based cakes, to succulent caramelized fruit tarts. All ingredients, as well as their coffee and tea,
Gerhard Richter
Tuesday, March 13, 2012
Germany's most celebrated modern painter turned 80 this year with a bang - retrospectives mushroomed all over the country, including a major show at the Neue Nationalgalerie. Around 140 paintings and five sculptures from all periods of the artist's extensive oeuvre, carefully selected together with the artist himself, offer visitors a profound insight into his diverse body of work. The Mies van der Rohe building is put to good use – the outside edge of the exhibition displays a dazzling array of Richter's small colorblock paintings, a long bright line facing out through the museum's glass walls.
First of May
Friday, March 9, 2012
May Day is quite the event in Berlin. Legends have it that witches gather, cackle and revel on Walpurgisnacht, the night from 30 April 30th to May 1st. In Berlin, the first of May was an important East German holiday, and it's still International Worker's Day, a celebration of labour movements and left-wing movements.
AADKmigrationen
Friday, March 9, 2012
The artistic network AADK (Berlin/Portugal) presents Tristesse Deluxe - Nomadics, a new exhibition that explores traveling. Talks, music/video shows and discussions as well as a classical exhibition with videos, tableau paintings, objects and spacial installation will explore traveling as an interface between new places and old networks, focussing on the artistic perception of space, time and motion.
Stasi Museum
Friday, March 2, 2012
The Stasi’s methods of coercing information were pretty incredible, fearsome then and now fascinating: scent tracking (storing each individual’s scents in jars), the infamous button cameras… The headquarters, in Berlin-Lichtenberg, including the offices of the Ministry for State Security,
Buck & Breck
Friday, March 2, 2012
Buck and Breck is a tiny, sophisticated one-room bar, that makes up for in style what it lacks in size. Walk past the police station and ring the bell to gain access to this modern speakeasy. (With contemporary Mitte polish – discreet, understated and classy.)
YamYam
Wednesday, February 29, 2012
Korean food has become a bit of a craze in Berlin, and we've found our favorite. YamYam serves fast and fresh Korean food, with veggies galore. It's the perfect place for a quick bite while out shopping on Alte Schönhauser Straße. If you're in the mood for soup try Monsieur Vuong's, but if you'd prefer a hot rice bowl YamYam's bibimbap can't be beat (rice, vegetables and meat if you'd like, in a hot stone bowl that crisps the rice to perfection, and topped by a glorious fried egg).
Messe Berlin and ICC
Tuesday, February 14, 2012
Getting to the Messe Berlin and ICC (exhibition grounds and congress center) is very easy with Berlin’s excellent public transportation. Walk or take the bus two stops from the Minilofts to Hauptbahnhof (main train station), then transfer to the S-Bahn to the Messe Süd station. The entire trip, door to door, takes less than 30 minutes.
