A visit to this fair city we call home at Miniloft is always full of surprises – especially if you scratch beneath the surface. And a more literal application of that will lead you to a world of wonders beneath the streets of Berlin, mainly due to the tours that have been led by Berliner Unterwelten rather consistently over the years. A tour company fixated on the hidden delights of Berlin, Berliner Unterwelten is all about subterranean exploration, peeking in at the fascinating glimpses of Berlin’s past that have been hidden underground.
Everything from Third Reich bunkers through to the Cold War and Berlin Wall are covered in a series of separate tours, mainly centred in the northern part of the city at Gesundbrunnen station. But round the corner from Miniloft at Humboldthain, you can explore the cavernous Flak Tower, one of the only remaining “Flak” bunkers built under Hitler’s orders in 1940, to defend Berlin from enemy aircraft.
Now in it’s 10th year, the tour is an alternative way of discovering the turbulent past of the city in the past 100 years through a fascinating structure that is also home to some of the city’s bat population. Which means the Flak Turm tour is only available from April to October, although Berliner Unterwelten also offer other tours in German, Spanish and English. In general, make sure you bring sturdy footwear, and remember to just turn up early on the day at the Unterwelten ticket office, as the tours generally cannot be pre-booked.
