A strip of the former “death zone” (empty area between the two walls that divided the city - the Berlin Wall was actually made up of two parallel walls) has happily become a large, warren-like flea market. Every Sunday, thousands of Berliners pack the market at Mauerpark, eating Wurst, drinking beer, and browsing the overflowing stalls for furniture, clothing, books, and oddities - from lead letterpresses to staring East German china dolls to vintage educational posters explaining nuclear energy. Bargaining is expected, and can be spirited. Go early if you don’t like crowds – after 12:00 it gets packed, especially on nice days.
Also check out the swings at the top of the park's hill - a soaring view!
