Located a stone’s throw from Miniloft is the world-renowned Charité hospital.
Founded in 1710 by King Frederick I of Prussia in anticipation for the arrival of the bubonic plague to Berlin, the Charité has been there to see Berlin develop ever since. In its 300 year history it has housed numerous great scientists including Rudolf Virchow, who spent his time there developing his cell theory. It also boasts many Nobel Prize winning alumni.
Today the Charité is one of the world’s leading hospitals for heart transplantation, rheumatology and even space medicine. Political leaders and dignitaries from all over the world are flown in to be treated at the Charité because of its reputation.
Beginning next year and continuing until 2016 the Campus Mitte building will be renovated with new intensive care and emergency rooms, and a nice new façade for us to look at from our office window.
