As far as facades go, the Komische Oper’s couldn’t be more worthy of the title. If you venture there, you’ll see a pretty simple wrapping, a hint that perhaps the Komische Oper is in fact a stripped down opera house. But once you are through the foyer, you’ll see the usual grandeur you’d expect. Why is this so? Well, that’s a question the Komische Oper could answer better than us – and that’s why a tour of the place is definitely worth your time.
It’s a great way to get a sense of the eventful history of the Komische Oper. Everything from the strange incongruence between interior and exterior, the history of the building and it’s legendary founding to the ideas of the Komische Oper’s founding father, Walter Felsenstein are all up for exploration. But it’s not just about the past – tours can also answer big, present day questions such as “what is it really like to stand on the Komische Oper’s revolving stage”. A peek behind the notoriously private curtain of the opera, it’s a tour that is as much of a treat as seeing a show there.
