Fine weather in Berlin means one thing – a return to living life out on the streets. And no event in the city is more street worthy than the Karneval der Kulturen. Berlin’s answer to Notting Hill Carnival in London, the annual parade, which happens around late May is one of Berlin’s biggest and brightest highlights.
Originally conceived of as a celebration of Berlin’s diversity against a backdrop of growing racism in Germany in the 90’s, the KdK is still a fantastic mix of the personal, political and downright fun, with an estimated 1.4million revelers in 2014. Taking place around the west end of Kreuzberg, the KdK begins at Hermannplatz, winding round to end up at Yorckstrasse. Alongside the parades, a variety of stalls and stages are set up along the route, giving you a four-day festival filled with music, food and colour – and all for free.
