Yes Berlin is a city of techno, but there are other genres too if you want to dance. From cheesy discos and the wedding like playlists of Clärchens to drum and bass and of course a wave of electro in various guises and bpm, it’s more a case of what you can’t find here, rather than what you can. Another party to look to is Balkan Beats, a regular club night in Berlin that provides the accordion with as much club clout as a synth or decks.
Balkan Beats is something of a Berlin institution, started by Robert Soko in 1993. Since then, the fusion of traditional instruments and sounds inspired by Balkan bands and a little bit of bass and beat have become a genre in their own right. Balkan Beats tours the world, but it always comes home to Berlin, with often monthly parties still managing to transform rooms full of strangers into jumping, arm-waving revellers.
