The Stasi’s methods of coercing information were pretty incredible, fearsome then and now fascinating: scent tracking (storing each individual’s scents in jars), the infamous button cameras… The headquarters, in Berlin-Lichtenberg, including the offices of the Ministry for State Security, Erich Mielke, were frozen in time after the fall of the wall, preserved as a memorial and research center. After extensive renovations to the building, ‘Haus 1’ has reopened for curious visitors. Definitely worth a visit!
