This Institute for Contemporary Art, housed in a former East German margarine factory, was one of the first to reclaim space in the derelict area of Mitte (not far from the Minilofts) after the Wall came down in 1990, and is now the cornerstone of the brisk contemporary art scene around Auguststrasse. A definite must-see for modern-art enthusiasts, with 2,000 square meters of exhibition space extending over five floors and a wonderful courtyard with a striking architectural highlight, the glass-walled Café Bravo.
Currently on show is the exhibition Political/Minimal, which presents art works from the past forty years that are ‘minimal in form and political in content,’ and Highlights from the Cologne Kunst/Film Bienalle (both through Jan 25).
