Berlin doesn’t seem like a natural wine capital in terms of production – but consumption? If the growing popularity of the WEINmesse Berlin is anything to go by, Berlin can quaff with the best of them. Now in its 20th year, the WINEfair Berlin has upgraded its space yet again to two of Tempelhof’s hangars, accommodating more than 30,000 wine lovers from Germany and beyond.
Under the theme of “Wine, Countryside & Enjoyment”, the organisers of the WEINmesse 2013 offer plenty of other distractions away from the bottles. Tourist destinations, other related products, gourmet supplies, wine tasting guides and literature and a separate food hall should you need to fill up mid way through testing. The fair is definitely focused on German wine, but there are exhibitors offering bottles from across the globe, giving you some 400 stalls to cover across three days from the 22 – 24th February.
In our world wise Miniloft opinion, a bit of careful planning is needed to avoid tasting fatigue and a fuzzy head for when you depart to head back home. The Berliner Wein Trophy (http://www.berliner-wein-trophy.de/) can help you narrow down your list, with prizes awarded to a small(ish) proportion of entrants. Make sure you rent out a glass, check in your coat and wander off into a wine wonderland.
